Glass Pot Turkey Care Tips: How to Keep Them Sounding Better and Lasting Longer

Glass pot turkey calls are my favorite along with a lot of other hunters for their crisp tones that can effectively mimic the sounds of a wild bird. However, proper care and maintenance are essential to ensure these calls continue to perform well and last for years. Here are some expert tips to keep your glass pot turkey call in peak condition.

1. Keep It Clean

Dirt, oil, and moisture can dull the sound of your glass pot call. To maintain clarity:

Wipe the glass surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth.

I like to use rubbing alcohol and a microfiber cloth to remove built-up residue. I typically clean my own calls once before and after season, and depending how the season treats my calls.

Avoid touching the striking surface with bare hands to prevent oils from affecting friction.

2. Properly Condition the Surface

The key to a great sound is proper surface friction. To achieve this:

Use a conditioning stone(all of our calls come with one and we sell them separately), fine-grit sandpaper, or a Scotch-Brite pad to roughen the glass surface.

Sand in small, circular motions to maintain an even texture.

Regularly recondition the surface, especially after extended use or if the sound becomes inconsistent.

3. Store It Safely

Protect your glass pot call from damage by storing it properly:

Keep it in a padded case or a protective pouch to prevent scratches or cracks.(My go-to cover is your favorite can koozie). Store it in a dry place away from extreme temperatures and humidity, which can affect sound quality. Avoid dropping or placing heavy objects on it, as glass is fragile.

4. Choose the Right Striker and Maintain It

The striker plays a crucial role in producing realistic turkey sounds:

Use different striker materials (wood, carbon, or acrylic) to achieve varying tones.Keep striker tips clean and roughened with sandpaper to maintain consistent friction.Store strikers separately to prevent damage to their tips.

5. Avoid Moisture Exposure

Glass pot calls are highly susceptible to moisture, which can affect their performance:

Keep them dry at all times, especially in damp hunting conditions.

Use a waterproof case when hunting in rainy or humid environments.

If the surface gets wet, dry it thoroughly before reconditioning.

6. Test and Tune Regularly

Even with proper care, regular testing ensures your glass pot call is performing at its best:

Practice calling techniques frequently to keep your skills sharp. Adjust grip pressure and striker angles to fine-tune the sound. If the call sounds dull or inconsistent, recondition the surface and check the striker.

By following these care tips, your glass pot turkey call will maintain its crisp, realistic sounds and stay in excellent condition for many hunting seasons to come. A well-maintained call can be the key to success in the field, helping you lure in that elusive gobbler with confidence.
